Joshua sends two spies to Jericho, where Rahab the prostitute hides them from the king’s search. She confesses that she knows the LORD has given Israel the land, for reports of the Red Sea and the eastern kings have melted the hearts of Canaan: “the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.” She asks for mercy, and the spies pledge to spare her household, marked by a scarlet cord in the window.
