With Moses dead, the LORD commissions Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan, promising to be with him as He was with Moses and to give every place his foot treads. Three times He commands, “Be strong and courageous,” binding courage to obedience: Joshua is to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night so that he may be careful to do all that is written. The officers ready the people to cross in three days.
