A great sign appears: “a woman clothed with the sun,” about to give birth, and “a great red dragon” waiting to devour her child. She bears “a male child, one who is to rule all the nations” (Christ), who is caught up to God. War breaks out in heaven, and the dragon (“that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan”) is thrown down. A voice declares that the saints “have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony,” and the enraged dragon goes off “to make war” on the woman’s other offspring, “those who keep the commandments of God.”
