When the Pharisees fault His disciples for not washing before eating, Jesus rebukes their tradition that nullifies God’s command, teaching that defilement comes not from without but from the heart. Withdrawing to the region of Tyre and Sidon, He commends the persistent faith of a Canaanite woman and heals her daughter. He then heals many and, moved again with compassion, feeds four thousand from seven loaves and a few fish.
