Mark study chapter

Mark 4

c. AD 28The parables of the kingdom (the sower, the seed, the mustard seed) and the stilling of the storm.

Jesus teaches the crowds in parables. The sower scatters seed on four kinds of soil, picturing the varied responses to the word; the lamp is meant to give light; the growing seed shows the kingdom’s mysterious growth; and the mustard seed shows its small beginning and great end. That evening, crossing the sea, a great storm arises while Jesus sleeps; He rebukes the wind and waves, and they grow calm, leaving the disciples awestruck: “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”
