Lest Israel boast in its own strength, the LORD trims Gideon’s army from thirty-two thousand to three hundred, keeping only those who lapped water from their hands. Armed with trumpets, torches, and empty jars, Gideon’s men surround the Midianite camp by night, and at the blast and the shout “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!” the enemy panics and destroys itself in the dark.
