Israel again does evil and is ravaged for seven years by Midianite raiders. The LORD sends a prophet, then His angel calls Gideon, threshing wheat in secret out of fear, “mighty man of valor.” Commanded to tear down his father’s altar to Baal, Gideon obeys by night; then, gathering an army, he twice tests God with a fleece, seeking assurance that God will save Israel by his hand.
