The LORD leaves certain nations to test Israel and teach war. When Israel serves the Baals, He sells them to Cushan-rishathaim, and they cry out; the Spirit-empowered Othniel delivers them and the land rests forty years. The cycle turns again with Ehud, who assassinates the fat Moabite king Eglon and frees Israel, and briefly with Shamgar, who strikes down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad.
