Pilate has Jesus flogged and the soldiers mock Him as “King of the Jews,” but the crowd cries “Crucify him!” Pilate, pressured, delivers Him to be crucified at Golgotha, where He is nailed to the cross under the title “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Jesus entrusts His mother to the beloved disciple, and having fulfilled all, cries, “It is finished,” and gives up His spirit. His side is pierced, and Joseph and Nicodemus bury Him in a nearby garden tomb.
