Knowing his ascension is near, Elijah travels with the devoted Elisha, who refuses to leave him and asks for a double portion of his spirit. As they walk, a chariot of fire separates them and Elijah is swept up to heaven in a whirlwind; Elisha takes up the fallen cloak and parts the Jordan, confirming that the LORD’s spirit rests on him. He then purifies a spring at Jericho, as his ministry of life begins.
