Ahaziah, counseled by his mother Athaliah and the house of Ahab, reigns wickedly and briefly, dying in Jehu’s purge. Then Athaliah, Ahab’s daughter, seizes the throne of Judah by slaughtering the royal descendants, nearly extinguishing David’s line. But the infant Joash is hidden in the temple by his aunt, the wife of the priest Jehoiada, preserving the Davidic hope through the darkness.
