On their priests’ advice, the Philistines return the ark to Israel on a new cart drawn by two milk cows, with golden guilt offerings representing their plague. The cows, against nature, head straight for Israelite Beth-shemesh, confirming that the LORD, not chance, has afflicted them. The people rejoice, but when some look irreverently into the ark, God strikes them, teaching the holiness of His presence.
