As the Philistines gather for war, Saul is gripped by terror, and the LORD refuses to answer him by any means. In desperation he disguises himself and consults a medium at Endor, though he had banished such practices. Samuel is brought up and pronounces final doom: the kingdom is torn from Saul, and tomorrow he and his sons will be with Samuel in death; Saul collapses in despair.
