The priests, the descendants of Aaron through Eleazar and Ithamar, are organized by lot into twenty-four divisions, so that the ministry of the temple is shared in an orderly rotation. The rest of the Levites are likewise assigned, ensuring that worship will be conducted “as the LORD... had commanded,” decently and in order.
