The Chronicler records the warriors who rallied to David, first while he was a fugitive from Saul and then at Hebron, skilled men from every tribe, “of a single mind to make David king.” The picture is of a united Israel joyfully embracing God’s chosen king, a unity the post-exilic community is meant to long for and imitate.
