Zephaniah opens with a thunderclap: “I will utterly sweep away everything from the face of the earth, declares the LORD.” The judgment falls first on Judah and Jerusalem for their idolatry: the remnant of Baal worship, those who bow to the starry host on the rooftops, those who swear both by the LORD and by Milcom. God will “punish the men who are complacent,” who say in their hearts that the LORD will do neither good nor ill. The prophet describes the coming day of the LORD in unforgettable terms: “a day of wrath... a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom.” Neither silver nor gold will be able to deliver anyone on that day of the LORD’s jealous wrath.
