The first great oracle opens with judgment on surrounding nations (Syria, Phoenicia (Tyre and Sidon), and Philistia) while God guards His own house. Then comes one of the Bible’s most beloved messianic prophecies: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!... Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey.” This King will cut off the weapons of war and “speak peace to the nations,” and His rule will reach “to the ends of the earth.” God promises to defend His people, set the captives free “because of the blood of my covenant,” and make them like jewels in a crown.
