Flowing directly from that mourning, God promises, “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.” He will cut off idols and false prophets from the land. Then comes the prophecy of the smitten Shepherd: “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me... Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” Through the fire of judgment a third will be refined like silver and gold, purified as God’s own people who call on His name and whom He answers, “They are my people,” and they say, “The LORD is my God.”
