Psalms 88

Heman; lamentThe darkest lament, crying to God from the depths with little relief.

The darkest psalm in the Psalter, an unrelieved lament from a man who feels near death and forsaken, crying to God day and night. Unusually, it ends without resolution (“darkness is my closest friend”) yet it is still addressed to “the God of my salvation,” modeling faith that keeps crying out even in unbroken darkness.
