Philippians setting & dates
Paul writes from prison to the church at Philippi, the first he planted in Europe.
The setting
The letter is addressed to the church in Philippi, a leading city of Macedonia in northern Greece and a proud Roman colony populated by many retired soldiers, whose citizens prized their Roman status: a background that gives depth to Paul’s reminder that “our citizenship is in heaven.” Philippi holds a special place in the story of the gospel: it was the first city in Europe where Paul preached, on his second missionary journey, after a vision called him across from Asia into Macedonia. There the church was born through the conversion of Lydia, a merchant of purple cloth, and of the jailer who guarded Paul and Silas after they were beaten and imprisoned, and who cried, “What must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16). From the beginning the Philippians were Paul’s loyal partners and supporters.
Paul wrote this letter, however, from a later imprisonment, most likely in Rome, at the center of the empire, around AD 62. The distance between the imprisoned apostle in Rome and his beloved church in Macedonia is bridged in the letter by the travels of Epaphroditus, who carried the Philippians’ gift the long journey to Paul, fell dangerously ill in his service, recovered, and now carries this letter of thanks back to them. The geography of Philippians is thus the geography of gospel friendship stretched across the empire: a bond of love, prayer, and partnership that not even prison walls or hundreds of miles could break, and that overflowed in joy on both ends.
