Cross-Testament Connections
Obadiah’s message points forward to Christ:
- The kingdom of the LORD: Obadiah’s climactic word is fulfilled in the everlasting kingdom of Christ (Obadiah 21; Revelation 11:15).
- The humbling of the proud: God’s judgment on Edom’s pride is fulfilled in Christ, who exalts the humble and brings down the arrogant (Obadiah 3-4; Luke 1:51-52).
- God’s defense of His people: God’s taking Edom’s cruelty personally anticipates Christ’s identifying with His people, so that to harm them is to harm Him (Obadiah 10-14; Acts 9:4).
- Deliverance on Zion: The escaped remnant on Mount Zion points to the salvation of God’s people gathered to the heavenly Zion in Christ (Obadiah 17; Hebrews 12:22-23).
