Assembling again in fasting and confession, the people separate from foreigners and stand to hear the Law, and the Levites lead a sweeping prayer that rehearses the whole story of grace: God the Creator, the call of Abraham, the exodus, the wilderness, the gift of the land, and Israel’s repeated rebellion, met again and again by a God “ready to forgive, gracious and merciful.” They acknowledge that God has been just in all that has come upon them, and, in their present distress as servants in their own land, they resolve to bind themselves to Him.
