The chapter records the organized effort of the whole community, listing family after family, guild after guild (priests, rulers, goldsmiths, perfumers, and ordinary residents) each repairing the section of wall and the gate nearest them. From the Sheep Gate around the city, the people build shoulder to shoulder, a picture of many hands united in a common God-given task, though a few nobles “would not stoop to serve their Lord.”
