At the heart of the book comes the messianic promise: “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah... from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” This Ruler will shepherd His flock in the strength of the LORD, His greatness reaching to the ends of the earth, and “he shall be their peace.” God will deliver His people from their enemies, preserve a remnant like refreshing dew among the nations, and purge away their idols, chariots, and sorceries, leaving them to trust in Him alone.
