Matthew study section
Matthew themes
Matthew develops Jesus as Messiah and King, the fulfillment of Scripture, the kingdom, and discipleship.
1. Jesus the Promised Messiah and King
Matthew presents Jesus as the Son of David and King of the Jews, the fulfillment of Israel’s messianic hope. From the genealogy to the cross that bears His royal title, the Gospel proclaims that the King has come.
2. The Fulfillment of Scripture
Again and again Matthew shows that the events of Jesus’ life happened “to fulfill” the prophets. Jesus does not set aside the Old Testament but brings it to its intended goal, for He came “not to abolish but to fulfill.”
3. The Kingdom of Heaven
The reign of God, breaking into the world in Jesus, is Matthew’s great theme. The kingdom is both present and future, entered by repentance and faith, and its character is unfolded in Jesus’ parables and teaching.
4. The Righteousness of the Kingdom
In the Sermon on the Mount and beyond, Jesus calls for a righteousness that “exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,” a righteousness of the heart, fulfilled in Him and worked in His people, not mere outward observance.
5. Discipleship and the Church
Matthew alone among the Gospels speaks of “the church.” Jesus gathers, teaches, and forms a community of disciples who follow Him, live by His word, and are sent to make disciples of all nations.
6. Immanuel: God With Us
The Gospel opens by naming Jesus “Immanuel, God with us,” and closes with His promise, “I am with you always.” The abiding presence of God with His people in Christ frames the whole book.
