Jesus calls the twelve apostles by name, gives them authority over unclean spirits and disease, and sends them out to the lost sheep of Israel to proclaim that the kingdom is at hand. He instructs them to travel simply and depend on God, warns them of coming persecution and division, and calls them to fearless confession and wholehearted allegiance: “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Even a cup of cold water given to a disciple will not lose its reward.
