Hearing of Jericho and Ai, the Gibeonites resort to trickery, arriving in worn clothes with moldy bread to claim they have come from a distant country, and secure a treaty of peace. Israel makes the covenant without inquiring of the LORD, and when the deceit is discovered they honor their oath but make the Gibeonites woodcutters and water-carriers for the house of God.
