John setting & dates
John centers on Judea and Jerusalem’s feasts, with signs at Cana and by the Sea of Galilee.
The setting
John’s Gospel ranges across the same land as the other Gospels but with a notable emphasis on Judea and Jerusalem, and especially on the great Jewish feasts. Where the other Gospels concentrate on Galilee, John repeatedly brings Jesus up to Jerusalem (for Passovers, the Feast of Booths, and the Feast of Dedication) and much of his teaching and conflict unfolds in and around the temple and the city’s pools and porticoes, such as Bethesda and Siloam. The northern scenes are still present: Cana of Galilee, where Jesus performs His first and second signs; the Sea of Galilee (which John also calls the Sea of Tiberias), where He feeds the five thousand and later restores Peter; and Samaria, where He meets the woman at Jacob’s well in Sychar.
The Gospel’s most concentrated setting is Jerusalem and its surroundings in the final days. Bethany, just outside the city, is the home of Lazarus, Martha, and Mary, and the site of the greatest sign. Within the city lie the upper room of the farewell discourse, and then the garden across the Kidron Valley where Jesus is arrested, the courts of Annas, Caiaphas, and Pilate where He is tried, and Golgotha and the nearby garden tomb where He is crucified, buried, and raised. The epilogue returns north to the Sea of Galilee for the risen Lord’s restoration of Peter, but the Gospel’s horizon, like the others, opens outward to a world for whom the Word became flesh.
