The Gospel opens with a majestic prologue: the eternal Word, who was with God and was God and made all things, “became flesh and dwelt among us,” full of grace and truth. John the Baptist bears witness that he is not the Christ but the voice preparing the way, and points to Jesus: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Jesus begins to gather disciples (Andrew, Peter, Philip, and Nathanael) who confess Him as the Son of God, the King of Israel, and the fulfillment of Moses and the Prophets.
