The alarm is sounded as Jerusalem is about to be besieged. The LORD invites the people to “stand by the roads... and ask for the ancient paths,” but they refuse; from prophet to priest all deal falsely, crying “Peace, peace, when there is no peace,” so the tested silver is rejected.
