Into the gloom of the northern lands “the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light,” for a child is born, a son given, whose government and peace will have no end: “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” reigning on David’s throne forever. The rest of the chapter turns to judgment on the proud, unrepentant northern kingdom, with the refrain, “his hand is stretched out still.”
