God longs to heal Israel, but their wickedness keeps being exposed; they are like a heated oven of intrigue and like “a cake not turned,” half-baked and useless. Ephraim mixes with the nations, flits “like a dove, silly and without sense,” calling to Egypt and Assyria instead of returning to God, who would redeem them.
