Within the Bible
- Previous: Philemon showed the gospel reconciling a household; Hebrews exalts the supremacy of Christ over the whole old covenant.
- Next: James turns to the practical faith that works itself out in real life.
- Thematic Connections:
- Psalm 110 - “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek,” the key to Hebrews’ argument.
- Jeremiah 31:31-34 - The new covenant, quoted at length in Hebrews 8.
- Leviticus 16 - The Day of Atonement, fulfilled by Christ’s entry into the true sanctuary.
- Genesis 14 - Melchizedek, the priest-king who prefigures Christ.
Cross-Testament Connections
Hebrews shows Christ as the fulfillment of the entire old covenant:
- The priest after Melchizedek: Jesus fulfills the eternal priesthood foretold in Psalm 110 and prefigured in Genesis 14 (Hebrews 7; Psalm 110:4).
- The new covenant: Christ’s covenant fulfills Jeremiah’s promise of forgiveness and a law on the heart (Hebrews 8:8-12; Jeremiah 31:31-34).
- The true Day of Atonement: Christ entered the heavenly sanctuary by His own blood, fulfilling and surpassing the old ritual (Hebrews 9; Leviticus 16).
- The final sacrifice: Christ’s once-for-all offering fulfills and ends the sacrificial system (Hebrews 10:1-14; Isaiah 53:10-12).
