Haggai study section
Haggai themes
Haggai develops putting God first, considering your ways, God’s presence, and the greater glory to come.
1. Putting God First
Haggai confronts the people for building their own comfortable houses while God’s house lay in ruins. The book calls God’s people to give Him first place in their priorities, time, and resources rather than serving themselves and neglecting Him.
2. “Consider Your Ways”
Twice Haggai calls the people to reflect honestly on their lives: their unsatisfying labor and frustrated efforts are meant to drive them to examine their neglect of God and turn back to Him. Self-examination leads to repentance and renewed obedience.
3. God’s Presence with His People
To the discouraged workers God gives the great assurance, “I am with you.” His presence is the antidote to fear and the strength for the task, meeting His people as they step out in obedience.
4. The Greater Glory to Come
God promises that the latter glory of the house will surpass the former, lifting the people’s eyes from their humble circumstances to His grand purpose. The best is yet to come, and it is fulfilled in Christ.
5. Obedience, Blessing, and Holiness
Through a lesson on holiness and defilement, Haggai shows that sin spreads easily but holiness is not so transferred; only by turning to God in obedience do they receive His blessing: “from this day on I will bless you.”
6. The Preserved Messianic Line
The promise to make Zerubbabel God’s “signet ring” reaffirms the Davidic covenant and preserves the line through which the Messiah would come, anchoring the restoration in God’s larger redemptive plan.
