The mediator, his successor, and the covenant people
Moses
The prophet and mediator of the covenant, who preaches these farewell sermons and dies within sight of the land
Joshua
Moses’ successor, commissioned to lead Israel across the Jordan into Canaan
The LORD
The covenant God who redeemed Israel, sets His love on them, and calls for their whole-hearted love in return
The new generation
The children of those who died in the wilderness, standing on the threshold of the promise
The promised Prophet
The one like Moses whom God will raise up, to whom Israel must listen (18:15), fulfilled in Christ
