Realizing from Jeremiah’s prophecy that the seventy years of exile are nearly complete, Daniel offers a moving prayer of confession on behalf of his people, appealing to God’s great mercy. Gabriel comes with the prophecy of “seventy weeks” decreed to finish transgression, atone for iniquity, and bring everlasting righteousness, foretelling the coming of an “anointed one” who will be “cut off,” a prophecy Christians see fulfilled in the atoning death of Christ.
