At a great feast, King Belshazzar profanes the sacred vessels from the Jerusalem temple, and a hand appears and writes on the wall, “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN.” Terrified, he summons Daniel, who rebukes his pride and interprets the words: his kingdom is numbered and finished, he is weighed and found wanting, and his realm will be divided among the Medes and Persians. That very night Belshazzar is killed, and Babylon falls.
