When Ananias and Sapphira lie to the Holy Spirit about their gift, they fall dead, and great fear comes on the church. The apostles perform many signs, and the church grows, until the jealous authorities imprison them, but an angel frees them to keep preaching. Hauled before the council, they answer, “We must obey God rather than men.” The wise Pharisee Gamaliel counsels caution, and the apostles, beaten and released, rejoice to suffer for the name and continue teaching Christ daily.
