Luke addresses Theophilus and recounts how the risen Jesus, over forty days, taught His disciples about the kingdom and gave them the promise and commission of 1:8, that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit and be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. Then Jesus ascends, and two angels promise He will return in the same way. The disciples devote themselves to prayer in the upper room and, guided by Scripture, choose Matthias to take Judas’s place among the Twelve.
