As David’s house grows stronger, Abner, insulted by Ish-bosheth, defects and pledges to bring all Israel to David. But Joab, avenging his brother and distrusting Abner, murders him at the gate of Hebron. David loudly disavows the deed, mourns Abner publicly, and fasts, so that all Israel knows the killing was not by the king’s will.
