When David sends envoys of condolence to the new Ammonite king, they are shamefully humiliated, and the Ammonites hire Aramean armies for the war that follows. Joab and Abishai, trusting God to do what is good in His sight, rout both forces, and when the Arameans regroup, David himself defeats them decisively, so that they make peace and no longer help Ammon.
