Hoshea, Israel’s last king, rebels against Assyria, and after a three-year siege Samaria falls in 722 BC; the northern kingdom is destroyed and its people deported. The chapter then pauses to explain the catastrophe theologically: Israel fell because it sinned against the LORD, worshiped other gods, followed the practices of the nations, and would not listen to the prophets, despite every warning. The land is resettled by foreigners who mingle the LORD’s worship with their idols.
