The chapter races through a period of decline and instability: Azariah (Uzziah) of Judah reigns long but is struck with leprosy for his presumption, while Israel churns through kings by assassination, Zechariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, and Pekah. Under them the Assyrian king Tiglath-pileser begins to invade and to carry portions of Israel into exile.
