Josiah becomes king at eight and begins early to seek the God of David, purging Judah and even the northern territory of idols. In repairing the temple, the high priest Hilkiah finds the Book of the Law, and when it is read, Josiah tears his clothes in grief and inquires of the prophetess Huldah, who confirms coming judgment but promises that Josiah, because his heart is tender, will be gathered in peace. He gathers the people and leads them to renew the covenant.
