Late in his reign, threatened by Israel, Asa strips the temple treasures to hire the king of Aram rather than trusting God. The seer Hanani rebukes him (“the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless”) but Asa, angry, imprisons him and, when later diseased in his feet, seeks physicians rather than the LORD, and dies.
