War breaks out with the Philistines, and after a defeat Israel superstitiously carries the ark into battle as a talisman. The Philistines rout them, slaughter thirty thousand, and capture the ark; Hophni and Phinehas die that day. When Eli hears, he falls and breaks his neck, and the wife of Phinehas, dying in childbirth, names her son Ichabod, “the glory has departed from Israel.”
