David takes refuge in the cave of Adullam, where the distressed and discontented gather to him, some four hundred men. When Doeg the Edomite reports that Ahimelech helped David, Saul, in murderous paranoia, orders the slaughter of the priests of Nob, eighty-five priests and the whole town, carried out by Doeg. Only Abiathar escapes to David, and the prophet Gad joins him.
