The LORD sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a son of Jesse. Passing over the impressive older brothers, for “the LORD looks on the heart”, Samuel anoints David, the youngest, a shepherd, and the Spirit of the LORD rushes upon him. Meanwhile the Spirit departs from Saul, and a tormenting spirit troubles him; David is brought to court to soothe the king with his lyre.
