John opens by proclaiming “that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes... concerning the word of life” (the eternal life “made manifest”) that his readers may have fellowship with the apostles, “and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.” He states the message: “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” Therefore those who claim fellowship with God while walking in darkness lie; but “if we walk in the light... the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” We are not to deny our sin, “but if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
