1 Corinthians study chapter

1 Corinthians 8

c. AD 55On food offered to idols, knowledge must yield to love, so as not to wound a weaker brother’s conscience.

On food that had been offered to idols, Paul grants that “an idol has no real existence” and that food does not commend us to God, but “knowledge puffs up, while love builds up.” Not everyone has this knowledge, and a weaker believer’s conscience may be wounded and their faith destroyed if they see a fellow Christian eating in an idol’s temple. Therefore love must limit liberty: “if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.”
